The first iteration of the Mustang arrived in 1964 and its iconic silhouette has seen it since garner a place in the annals of motoring folklore – even cinematic. Referred to as the “Unicorn” by Nicolas Cage in the year 2000 motoring odyssey “Gone in 60 Seconds”. He was of course referring to the 1967 Mustang Ford GT500 Shelby Cobra, but 2015 saw Ford Performance introduce an all new Mustang, so I got behind the wheel of the 2017 Ford Mustang 5.0 V8 GT Fastback to see if its legacy is in good hands.
One thing to note is that this latest edition is the first Mustang to be specifically made right hand drive, and that speaks volumes for its import popularity in the UK. Don’t get me wrong, we don’t get every model that they enjoy in the States – the 3.7L Mustang V6 Fastback model to name one – but at least we’ve been aptly accounted for on this occasion, and for good reason too. I purposefully chose the 5.0L V8 Mustang GT to test out, forgoing the 2.3 L EcoBoost model, which, although visually consistent with the rest of the range, is painfully lacking in the “muscle” department. Still at circa £26k the EcoBoost engine represents very good value for your poundage; value for money being a theme that translates across the entire range. One thing the 5.0 V8 GT most certainly wasn’t short of is power. Change the drive mode to “Sport” and the accelerator pedal gets excited at the merest touch, with the car threatening to eat up the road ahead. Encourage the pedal and you are hurtled along; like a startled dog-owner holding onto a leash as his dog dashes off to chase a rabbit while he’s mid-conversation. You get the idea. But this is fun, as you are in complete control, with the only restraint being the lack of straight roads – and the speed limit of course.

The handling while sharp, reminds you at all times that you are in a muscle car, whilst the car’s protruding bonnet and sheer road presence reminds you that you’re in a 1745kg vehicle.
The premium interior was indeed premium, with the enveloping leather seats and padded leather armrests over and beyond what you would come to expect for a £36k car. What’s more, space is also at a premium with the two-door Mustang truly living up to its four-seater billing – unlike an Audi TT for example.

The real question though is… does this Mustang really feel like a Mustang…? The answer is yes, the Mustang is back and after a few near misses, Ford Performance have got the balance between modernity and history spot on. Feature rich and UK friendly – engine power aside, I challenge you to find a better value car with the kudos and iconic status of the 2017 Ford Mustang GT. No need to look, you won’t find one.
